ZF inverters: description and function

As you know, when we talk about marine transmission, we refer to the world of inverters and their operation.

Their function is to reverse the direction of rotation of the propeller and for this reason they play a fundamental role.

Reliable, safe, and functional, ZF inverters are among the most appreciated by the nautical market lovers.

The experience and professionalism of the company guarantee a high quality and a long life of the products that are made with the aim of obtaining minimum noise with maximum comfort.

For pleasure boats, ZF Marine offers a wide range of transmissions for engines up to 1,400 kW and for all types of installation.

For sailing or river boats, ZF reserves the mechanical transmissions of the “M” series. Greater power corresponds to larger transmissions, which is why for pleasure boats such as speedboats for water skiing or fishing, Cruise yachts and luxury motor yachts are used more powerful inverters as the range of 2-speed power shift transmissions.

One of the main advantages you will benefit from buying ZF inverters is the UNI ISO 9001:2015 certification, a certificate that recognizes the quality of the products.

ZF inverters classification, let’s see them together

According to their characteristics, ZF inverters can be classified in 4 types of use. Below you can read the classification definitions to choose the one that best suits your needs:

Pleasure Duty

ZF pleasure duty inverters are particularly suitable for highly intermittent vessels with very wide variations in engine speed and power. The average operating limit of the engine is 500 hours/year. While for mechanical transmissions (“M”) it is 300 hours/year. Typically, the hull has a planing shape. The most suitable applications are for private, non-commercial, non-charter, leisure boats, not racing boats.

Light Duty

ZF light duty inverters are particularly suitable for boats with intermittent operation with large engine variations. The average operating limit of the engine is 2500 hours/year. While for hydraulic transmissions lower than the ZF 2000 series is 2000 hours/year. Typically, the hull has a planing and semi-displacement shape. As for applications, they are typically indicated for private boats and charters, sports and leisure, government applications, not for racing boats.

Medium Duty

ZF medium duty inverters are particularly suitable for boats with intermittent operation with some engine variations. The average engine operating limit is 4000 hours/year. While for transmissions lower than the ZF 2000 series and workboat ZF Series W2300 is 3500 hours/year. Typically, the hull has a semi-displacement and displacement shape. As for applications: they are typically suitable for charter and commercial boats (eg crew boats), sports and leisure activities and government applications.

Continuous Duty

The ZF continuous duty inverters are particularly suitable for boats with continuous operation with minimal or zero changes in engine speed and power. The average engine operating limit is unlimited. Typically, the hull has a displacement shape. As for the applications, they are typically indicated for heavy commercial ships.
